4-29-09: Stanford: Construction projects advance with green light from trustees

The Board of Trustees recently gave the Athletics Department the green light to proceed with building 17 single-family homes and four duplexes for coaching staff—one of several construction projects trustees acted on during their April 13-14 meeting.

The board gave construction approval—the final step in the review process—to the $16 million Olmsted Road Staff Rental Housing project on the east side of campus.

The cost and size of the project has seesawed since it was first proposed by the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation in late 2007. The original proposal called for 29 three- and four-bedroom homes at a cost of $26.8 million. In 2008 the project was scaled back to 22 three-bedroom homes at a cost of $14.3 million.

The revised project now includes 17 three-bedroom homes and four two-bedroom duplexes. The housing will be built on a 3-acre site on the east side of campus bounded by El Camino Real, Stanford Avenue and Olmsted Road.

Crews are expected to begin laying foundations and framing the buildings in June, with construction completed in March 2010.

Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology
Construction is already under way on the Nano Center, which is located in the Science and Engineering Quadrangle, just west of the university's Main Quad.

At its recent meeting, the board gave concept approval to the complete interior construction of the center, including laboratories and tool hookups. The $20 million "fit-up" also includes relocating the labs currently in the Ginzton Laboratory building.

The Nano Center's lab facilities will include a new Nanopatterning Center with flexible clean rooms, space for two transmission electron microscopes, electron beam lithography equipment and other research equipment. A lab from the Astrophysics Department will be relocated to the center.

The fit-up project will return to trustees for project and partial construction approval in June, and for final construction approval in October. Laboratories will be relocated in phases, and the final estimated completion date is August 2010.

Jen-Hsun Huang School of Engineering Center
Construction is already under way at the Huang Center, which is also located in the Science and Engineering Quadrangle.

At its recent meeting, the board gave concept approval for the fit-up of the building's interior enhancements and equipment and laboratory build-outs.

The $14 million fit-up includes installation of a specialized audio/visual system for the center's conference room and auditorium and the classrooms of the Stanford Center for Professional Development. The center also will have a café, a catering kitchen for the boardroom, a wood and metal shop, and a shared server room.

Bing Concert Hall
Trustees gave design approval—the third step in the review process—to the Bing Concert Hall, named after longtime Stanford benefactors Helen and Peter Bing, '55, who have donated $50 million toward its construction.

The planned concert hall, envisioned as a world-class facility that will meet the latest acoustical and technical standards, was designed to host a range of music groups, from small chamber ensembles to a medium-size orchestra. It will seat 877 people.

At its recent meeting, the board set the budget for the concert hall at $133 million, a decrease of $12 million since trustees approved the hall's concept and design in late 2008.

The Bing Concert Hall will be located on a triangular site bordered by the Alumni Center, Campus Drive East, Lasuen Street and Frost Amphitheater.

The plan will return to trustees for project approval in October, and for construction approval in February 2010. It is expected to open in the summer of 2012.
