Durham, NC -- Duke officials announced (Tuesday) today that the pharmacy in the Student Health Center on West Campus will be closing permanently, as of Dec. 18, 2009.
The pharmacy has been struggling financially for several years now, due in large part to rising operational and drug costs, as well as increased competition from outside pharmacies,” said Sue Wasiolek, Dean of Students and Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs. “Unfortunately, efforts to find a model that would stem pharmacy losses were unsuccessful.”
Students with current prescriptions at the Student Health pharmacy will be required to move their prescriptions to a new pharmacy of their choice before December 18. To move a prescription to a new pharmacy, students should call Student Health at 681-WELL, option #4., and provide the name and phone number or fax number of the pharmacy to which they would like their prescription(s) transferred.
“Any prescriptions written by Duke providers may be filled at the Duke outpatient pharmacy, just upstairs from the Student Health Center”, according to Dr. Bill Purdy, executive director of Duke Student Health. “Other students may elect to use one of the local pharmacies. Also, for chronic medications, more and more insurance companies are encouraging the use of their mail-in pharmacy service.”
The disposition of prescriptions not moved before December 18 will be communicated in the coming weeks. Students experiencing difficulties transferring or filling prescriptions should contact Student Health at 681-WELL
